Intro

Liften is een geweldige manier van reizen. Het is gratis. Je komt overal, waar je maar naar toe wilt, maar ook op plaatsen waar je anders nooit zou komen. Bovendien ontmoet je veel vriendelijke mensen. Na een paar positieve verhalen van enkele vrienden heb ik in juli 1997 mijn geluk ook maar eens beproefd. Sindsdien heb ik veel gelift, inmiddels tienduizenden kilometers. Als je wilt weten waar en wanneer kijk dan op de lijst van al mijn liften.

Op deze pagina kun je mijn tips vinden voor als je wilt gaan liften, maar niet goed weet hoe. Als je je afvraagt wat er avontuurlijk is aan langs de kant van de weg staan wachten, lees dan het verslag van mijn liftvakantie naar de Balkan. Heb je vrienden die ook graag liften of die je wilt overhalen te gaan liften, organiseer dan eens een liftwedstrijd. Op internet is veel informatie over liften te vinden, hier vind je een lijst van links naar de enkele van de beste pagina's over liften op het web.
 

Intro

Hitching is a great way of travelling. It's free. You get anywhere, where you want to go, but also to places you would never visit otherwise. Moreover you will meet many friendly people. After a few positive stories of some friends I tried my luck in 1997. In the years since I have hitched a lot, up to now ten thousands of kilometres. If you want to know where and when take a look at the list of all my lifts.

On this page you can find my tips for if you are interested in hitching, but do not know how to start. When you doubt waiting at the side of the road is adventure, read the travellog of my trip to the Balkan. If your friends like to hitch too, or you would like to persuade them to start hitching, consider organising a hitching contest. There is a lot of information on the internet on hitching, here you can find a list of links to some of the best websites on hitching.
 

Lifttips

Hoewel er weldegelijk dingen zijn die slim zijn om te doen of na te laten, heeft iedere lifter zo z'n eigen ideeën over hoe je het beste kunt liften. Ik ben in der tijd gewoon begonnen en heb vanzelf ontdekt wat handig is en wat niet. Dus ga naar buiten en steek je duim op! Wie desalniettemin graag specifieke tips wil of vragen heeft kan me altijd mailen, of kijken of het te vinden is op mijn pagina met lifttips...

Although there are things you better do or don't, every hitcher has his own ideas on what the best way to hitch is. I just started my first time and figured out myself what's smart and what's not. Een liftvakantie

Liften is uitermate geschikt als vervoermiddel voor een vakantie. Dat de benodigde reistijd nogal onvoorspelbaar is geeft dan niet zo. De onvoorspelbaarheid geeft juist een aangename vorm van avontuur. Plan niet te veel en kijk waar je uitkomt. Met geen andere vervoersmethode ontmoet je zoveel vriendelijke mensen van de plaatselijke bevolking, die je niet alleen een indruk van de lokale cultuur geven, maar je ook precies kunnen vertellen welke plekken een bezoek waard zijn.

In de zomer van 1999 ben ik samen met studiegenoot Wilmar Visschers op vakantie geweest. Liftend (uiteraard) zijn we o.a. door Slovenië, Kroatië en Bosnië getrokken. Ten tijde van de NAVO-bombardementen op Servië en slechts vier jaar na het einde van de oorlog in Bosnië, gingen toen nog weinig toeristen die kant op. Hitching holidays

Hitchhiking is especially a good way of transport during holidays. In this case it's no problem that the amount of time needed to get somewhere is unpredictable. The unpredictable nature of hitching is precisely what makes it adventurous. Do not plan to much, just find out where it brings you. With no other way of transport you will meet so many friendly local people. They do not only give you insight in the local culture, they can also exactly tell you which places are worth a visit.

In the summer of 1999 I hitchhiked to Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia together with fellow student Wilmar Visschers. During the NATO bombings on Serbia and only four years after the end of the war in Bosnia, not many tourists went there yet these days. Een liftwedstrijd

Een liftwedstrijd is onzinnig. De geluksfactor van liften is namelijk zo groot dat je wel heel grote afstanden moet gaan liften om te kunnen bepalen wie de beste is. Een liftwedstrijd is desalniettemin erg leuk. De wetenschap dat de andere teams ook onderweg zijn, maakt het toch spannend. Dat je ze onderweg zelfs incidenteel tegenkomt maakt het extra leuk. Op de plaats van bestemming kun je bovendien een paar gezellige dagen met elkaar doorbrengen. Een liftwedstrijd is een uitstekende manier om mensen over te halen ook te gaan liften. Organiseer dus zelf eens een liftwedstrijd.

In 2001 heb ik samen met studiegenoot Marcel Andriesse een liftwedstrijd georganiseerd. Vier teams deden mee, het winnend team deed er 36 uur en 15 minuten over om van de markt in Delft naar de haven van San Remo aan de Middellandse Zee in Italië te komen. A hitching contest

A hitching contest is pointless. Because the factor of luck is so large that you will have to hitch enormous distances to find out who is the best. Nevertheless, a hitching contest is fun. Knowing that the other teams are on their way too, makes it exciting. To meet them occasionally at the road side is funny. At the destination you can all have some nice days together too. A hitching contest is a great way to persuade people to start hitching too. So, organise a hitching contest yourself ones.

In 2001 I organised, together with a fellow student, a hitching contest. Four teams competed, it took the winning team 36 hours and 15 minutes to get from the market square in Delft (the Netherlands) to the harbour of San Remo at the Mediterranean Sea in Italy. De beste liftpagina's

Google Maps
De ideale manier om van tevoren goede liftplaatsen te vinden. Zoom maar eens helemaal in op een oprit en je kunt bijvoorbeeld zien of deze een vluchtstrook heeft. Helaas zijn de beelden soms verouderd of alleen met lage resolutie beschikbaar, maar dat wordt waarschijnlijk alleen maar beter in de toekomst.

Goede liftplaatsten over de hele wereld, gemarkeerd op een interactieve kaart. Je kan zelf plaatsen toevoegen.

Hitchhinking in the Netherlands
Personnlijke pagina van Frank Verhart met algemene informatie over liften in Nederland en beschrijvingen van veel goede liftplaatsen verspreid over het land.

Wikitravel, Hitchwiki en World Wikia
Drie internetpagina's die min of meer dezelfde mogelijkheden bieden. Ik weet niet welke ik moet promoten, dus geef ik ze maar allemaal.

Autostop Guide to Europe
Pagina met informatie over de beste liftplaatsen in de grotere steden van Europa. De auteur Daan Toner heeft hiervoor al deze plaatsen per auto bezocht, ook geeft hij enkele algemene lifttips. Er is een boek te koop met dezelfde informatie. Omdat de internetpagina vaak onbereikbaar is geef ik hier een kopie van het boek (12 MB pdf).

Digihitch
Ze noemen het zelf een 'subcultural movement'. De pagina geeft nuttige informatie zoals liftzinnetjes in veel talen en reisverhalen.

Vilnius Hitch Hikers Club
Liftersvereniging gezeteld in Vilnius (Litouwen), ze organiseren o.a. liftexpedities rond de wereld en een jaarlijkse liftersconferentie. Een zeer uitgebreide site met bijvoorbeeld records zoals de langste lift.

Google Maps
The ideal way to find good spots for hitching. If you zoom in on an access road of a motor way, you can see whether it has an emergency lane for instance. Unfortunately, in some cases the images are outdated or of low resolution, but this will probably only improve in the future.

Hitchwiki Maps
Good hitching spots over all of the world, marked on an interactive map. You can add spots yourself.

Hitchhinking in the Netherlands
A personal site by Frank Verhart with general information on hitchhiking in the Netherlands, and descriptions of many good hitching spots in the Netherlands.

Wikitravel, Hitchwiki and World Wikia
Three websites with more or less the same functionality. I do not know which one to promote, so I list them all.

Autostop Guide to Europe
Information on the best places to hitch from the bigger cities of Europe. The author Daan Toner has visited all these places by car to find them, besides this he gives some general tips on hitching. You can buy a book with the same information. As the site is often not accessable, I give here a copy of the book (12 MB pdf).

Digihitch
A 'subcultural' movement they call it. The site has usefull information like hitching phrases in many languages and travel stories.

Vilnius Hitch Hikers Club
Hitchers association with home town Vilnius (Lithuania). It organises a yearly conference, hitching contests and more. Very extensive site with e.g. records like the longest lift.
